Laptop Orchestra Piece

10 minute piece – set tempo (120) - set key (C major).

6 players – each one playing a different component in the song

Player 1 – The Beat – Improvise a beat with a drum machine such as redrum on reason or an equivalent. Build it up as you go along, break it down appropriately.

Player 2 – The Bass – use different bass sounds throughout – try to keep to lower bass notes so they don't clash with other peoples sounds

Player 3 – Atmospherics / Pads – Use a range of pads to make the piece sound bigger.

Player 4 – The Lead – Improvised lead melody

Player 5 – FX – any sort of FX sounds

Player 6 – Vocals / Speech – Use already sampled vocals / speech – could process anyway you want. Could do live vocals processing them as you say them.

Below is the general structure of the piece. FX and Vocal players don't fit into this anywhere specifically, so they can just play when they feel is best for the overall piece. The reasoning for each player coming in 1 minute after each other is so that each person has enough time to prepare how they're going to introduce themselves into the piece (loading the correct patch / quickly practising what they might play when they come in etc.).

0:00 – 1:02 (32nd bar) – Drum pattern plays on its own. Could begin as just a 4 to the floor beat and build over the minute, introducing a snare and hi-hat. But its totally up to the player what they do. They then continue for the rest of the piece playing until specified.

1:02 – 2:06 (64th bar) – Bass is introduced. This could determine how the rest of the piece gets played depending on how the bass is played. With long smooth bass notes there would be more room for the other players to do more, with erratic bass notes things could get a little messy. This should be considered.

2:06 – 3:10 (96th bar) – Atmospherics introduced. This will fill out the overall sound of the track and prepare the audience for the introduction of the lead.

3:10 – 5:18 (160th bar) – The lead is introduced. Played with a big sounding synth so it stands out from the rest – shouldn't be too hard to improvise as its in C major (white notes only!)

5:18 – 6:22 (192nd bar) – The Beat, Lead and Vocals stop, leaving just the bass, atmospherics and fx. Should be quite an effective breakdown.

6:22 – 7:26 (224th bar) – The lead slowly fades back in over this minute on top of the bass, atmospherics and fx.

7:26 – 9:34 (288th bar) – Beat and vocals re-introduced. Lead now at good volume.

9:34 – 10:38 (320th bar) – Each person stops in this order: lead / vocals / effects (on 9:00), drums / bass (on 9:30), atmospherics finishes on its own.
